Frequently asked questions

Activation, recording modes, storage, interrupted uploads, evidence access, emergency services and your responsibilities under recording law.

How do I activate iWatch?

Open the app and press the large Activate iWatch button, or use supported voice activation with a phrase such as “iWatch On.” Activation is designed to take as few screens and confirmations as reasonably possible. The ability to customise your activation phrase is planned for a future version.

What's the difference between Video Mode and Audio Mode?

Video Mode records using the front-facing camera, with audio where recording audio is legally permitted where you are. Audio Mode records sound only. Both create a safety session that is time and date associated, attached to your account, and uploaded securely when the session ends. Choose whichever is appropriate and safe for the situation you're in.

Where are my recordings stored?

Recordings are saved on your device during the session, then uploaded to your protected iWatch account storage. Completed sessions appear in your private Evidence Vault, where you can see the date, time, recording type, duration, upload status, file name and any notes you added.

What happens if I lose signal while a recording is uploading?

The recording is not lost. It stays saved and is marked Needs connection. When a connection is available again, the upload resumes and retries rather than starting over. iWatch will only mark the session as Secured once the server confirms the upload completed.

How do I know a recording is really saved?

By its status. Every session shows one of four states — Recording, Uploading, Secured, or Needs connection. Secured is used only after the server confirms a successful upload. iWatch is deliberately built not to tell you evidence is safe before it actually is.

Who can access my evidence?

Access to your Evidence Vault requires authentication against your own account. Evidence is not exposed through predictable public URLs. iWatch administrators manage accounts, support and system health, and administrative access does not automatically extend to the contents of private recordings. Lawful legal process is an exception no provider can opt out of; our Privacy Policy will set out how such requests are handled.

Does iWatch contact the police or my family for me?

No. iWatch provides a highly visible 911 emergency button that helps you place a call from your own phone, and it will tell you clearly what that button does and any confirmation your operating system requires. iWatch does not notify emergency services on your behalf, and it does not alert family members or share your session with anyone automatically. In an emergency, call 911 or your local emergency service whenever it is safe and possible to do so.

Is it legal for me to record?

That depends entirely on where you are. Recording and privacy laws differ by state and country, including rules about recording other people without their consent, and rules that treat audio differently from video. You are responsible for complying with the laws that apply to you. iWatch does not provide legal advice — please see our Recording & Legal Notice.

Can I store my driver's licence and insurance in iWatch?

Yes. iWatch includes a secure document area for your driver's licence or state ID, insurance information, vehicle information, emergency information and other important documents, protected by your account sign-in and a 4-digit PIN for fast authorised access.

Does iWatch record my location?

Location metadata is not attached to safety sessions today. A future version may offer it — and if it does, it will only be attached with your explicit permission.
